Cyclone Dust Collectors

Cyclone dust collectors can be used as pre-separators to reduce the dust load reaching the final filter, or as protective devices to remove large hot particles from the gas or air stream to prevent damage to the filter material.

High efficiency cyclones require more energy and therefore have higher running costs. Lower efficiency cyclones are often more effective when used together with a final filter or dust collector, as they allow a better mix of particle sizes to reach the filter material, which can help to extend the useful working life of the filter material.

Benefits of using a Cyclone
  • Low initial cost
  • Low operating expenses
  • No moving internal parts
  • Minimal space requirements

Inertial separators are the simplest type of dust collector. They are normally used to reduce the volume of particles from the mass flow of an air stream or as a pre separator or pre filter for collectors handling greater efficiencies. Cyclone dust collectors (named for their vortex motion similar to that of cyclones and tornados) are large funnel shaped tubes.

Dust and debris are pulled into the tangential inlet at high velocities, forcing material against the walls in a cyclonic motion. Larger particles slide down into the hopper while smaller or fine dust exits out the other side.

Further dust separation can be provided downstream with a fabric filter dust collector. Separation efficiencies depend on the centrifugal force applied upon the dust (particles with larger mass being subject to greater force). Velocity, cyclone curvature profile, and the particulate mass combined with the time that the force is applied against the particles, characterizes performance.

Cyclone dust collectors are designed with either large or narrow diameters, depending upon the application. Small diameter cyclones have high dust collection efficiencies at low dust loads (0.1 to 6 grains per cubic foot) and high pressure drop of 6 to 10 inches w.c. (water column).

Large diameter cyclones can handle high dust loads (50-100 grains per cu.ft) with low pressure drops (1.5 to 3 inch w.c.) efficiently. Cyclones are not very efficient at low dust loads.

Based on careful evaluation of your Cyclone application, Nederman MikroPul will custom select:

  • Single, twin, or quad arrangement (leftmost photo above shows a Nederman MikroPul Quad Cyclone cleaning a gas stream, of 220,000 ACFM, vented from a bauxite kiln)
  • Outlet to inlet relationships
  • Barrel length
  • Cone length

Nederman MikroPul can also custom design the following enhancements as required:

  • Internal surface finishes to minimize abrasion
  • Build-up caused by sticky particulate
  • Ease of access
  • Body flanges
  • Wear liners, fixed or removable
  • Refractory lining for wear or high temperatures
  • ASME coded construction
  • Stainless steel or more exotic alloy construction
